I'm sure this topic has been discussed numerous times before but I have to ask again. I'm working on a Westnghouse portable model H302P5 and it has a selenium rectifier.
Jan 02, 2011· I remember blowing a selenium rectifier or two in my day and they gave off a rather pungent odor. Blown, they would go to short and burn some wires. For replacement maybe you could use auto/truck alternator diodes that might take the amperage.
Apr 17, 2017· Question: What series resistance do we add when we replace the Selenium rectifier with a diode rectifier? The 1N4007 diodes that we're using for the rectifier are much more efficient than the selenium rectifier and won't drop as much voltage... so we need a series resistance to compensate.

Jul 14, 2012· I have met some of these rectifiers. I had 2 rectifier stacks once with a parallel configuration of 5 diodes each, good for 200 Amps. These tiny selenium diodes fall out of the frame, once you take it apart.
Feb 03, 2012· Notice the silicon rectifier is mounted right on top of the old selenium. Notice also there are no wires connected to the old selenium rectifier. it's just sitting there.
Dec 07, 1998· I have seen a number of posts recently about replacing selenium rectifiers, both her and in the antiques group. It is always a good idea to do this
Dec 24, 2014· My recently acquired Apache does not have the two selenium rectifiers for the -150V power supply. It has instead, a 6AL5 dual vacuum tube rectifier. My first thought was that somebody who owned the rig before me had modified the transmitter by eliminating the seleniums and replaced them with the 6AL5.
May 10, 2014· Hi, I am replacing the selenium rectifier in my Ampex 1/4" machine with a diode but I don't know exactly what to buy. The schematic only has two pieces of information about the rectifier.
Aug 01, 2016· Selenium rectifier danger! I have noticed in several posts, references to selenium rectifiers in these vintage generators. I think it prudent to inform people that these can be …

Mar 27, 2014· So basically, each disc is a rectifier, feed (say) 12V AC from one side of a transformer secondary onto one face of the disc, connect one lead of your meter to the other side of the transformer secondary and the other meter lead to the other face of the disc and see if the DC voltage is either positive or negative.

Feb 04, 2016· That is because selenium rectifiers are lousy at completely blocking reverse current, and leaving it connected will discharge the battery over time. Motors with newer, silicone rectifiers do not have that problem, so the charging current does not go through the ignition switch.

Mar 30, 2005· On the topic of retaining a selenium rectifier, it probably is a really good idea to replace it with silicon diodes. I am not a chemist but I understand that when a selenium rectifier fails it can release toxic gas, and retaining a selenium rectifier adds …
Jul 16, 2010· The selenium rectifier has a slightly different voltage drop than a silicon diode, but maybe you don't need to change your bias set resistors. You should check the yellow Astrons for leakage, they are notorious.
I've searched and read through the archives regarding selenium rectifier (SR) replacement and found discussions on the Zenith that I am working on.
Abstract: Selenium rectifiers are dry-plate rectifiers of the electronic type. The history of dry rectifiers hegan some 30 years ago with the advent of the copper-sulphide rectifier. In the early 20' s, the copper-oxide type came into common use, and during the past three years, selenium rectifiers ...
Apr 16, 2008· selenium rectifiers are not involved in the 600 volt supply. CR2 A&B generate the 12.6 volt filament voltage and can be adjusted with R1. No problem there. The other selenium rectifier CR1 is to generate a negative bias supply.which is also adjustable and further clamped by Zener CR3. The high voltage is rectified by CR4 and CR5 which, I assume are
Feb 25, 2015· The trouble with selenium rectifiers is that they are inefficient, having much higher resistance than solid state diodes and therefore generate excess heat when in use which is why they have cooling fins. So your rectifier getting warm is probably normal, unless it still gets warm with the motor disconnected.
Nov 21, 2007· rectifiers used to give you the voltage (B, in this case 250 volts) and current rating (C, in this case 50mA) of the device. I agree with the other posters that you can replace the selenium with a

The selenium rectifiers had some real advantages, plus a few negative sides but for the more simple needs of a radio circuit, if they just wanted to convert a bit of AC to a DC voltage, the selenium rectifier was a nice item to use. Selenium rectifiers came in many sizes, shapes, configurations, and colors.

In the power supply there is a selenium rectifier followed by a 33 ohm resistor that is connected to a 60uF capacitor that is then connected to a 40uF capacitor through a 220 ohm resistor that is then connected to a 40uf capacitor through a 1K ohm resistor.
Apr 02, 2007· About the bias selenium rectifier and how I replaced it, attached is a photo. In the top photo you will see the bias selenium rectifier in between the 2 bias potentiometers before I replaced it. In the second photo you will see I soldered a 1N4004 diode on a terminal strip.
A selenium rectifier is a type of metal rectifier, invented in 1933. They were used in power supplies for electronic equipment, and in high current battery charger applications until they were superseded by silicon diode rectifiers in the late 1960s.
